22 Exceptional Canadian Sport Horses: Cilroy to Hickstead

Some of North America’s top sport horses are the result of 100 years of matchmaking by Canadian Sport Horse Association breeders. 

From Olympic medal winners to champion hunters, show jumpers, eventers, and influential breeding stallions, these exceptional horses have made their mark on equestrian sport in Canada and internationally. As the Canadian Sport Horse Association (CSHA) celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026, their achievements reflect a century of dedication to breeding and developing outstanding performance horses. Here are a few of the stars they’ve produced:

COTTAGE COLLEEN

MAPLE LEE

Maple Lee by First Secretary was one of the best horses that Sam Stanley bred. He was ridden to second place in the 1967 Canadian Equestrian Team show jumping trials by Tom Gayford. SIOUX DOE

REVENIR

Revenir, a 1977 mare by The Schreiber, was bred, owned, and ridden by Dinnie Greenway of Brickenden Stables. She won the 1980 Canadian Hunter Under Saddle with Greenway.

HEIRLOOM

Heirloom was a 1981 mare by Spun Gold, bred and owned by Diana Martyn. She won the Canadian Equestrian Federation 1984 Reserve Championship for Ontario 3-year-olds. In 1987, she was the Champion Second Year Green Working Hunter in Ontario and Reserve Champion Regular Working Hunter in Ontario. SUPER TROOPER

HICKSTEAD

Canadian show jumper Eric Lamaze riding Hickstead, the CSHA breeding-approved stallion who won individual gold and team silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Hickstead, a 1996 stallion by the International Grand Prix jumper Hamlet, was ridden by Canada’s Eric Lamaze to an individual show jumping gold medal and team silver medal at the 2008 Olympics. They also won the 2007 $1 million CN International at Spruce Meadows, plus many other grand prix. CABARDINO

Cabardino, a 1999 Canadian Sport Horse-approved stallion, stood at W. Charlot Farms. He was the #1 USEF Hunter Sire in 2017 and 2018 and has sired numerous hunter champions in Canada and the US.

PHILANA

CAFE NOIR

MESSENGER VF

Messenger VF, a 2013 stallion bred by ValleyField Farm in Alberta, is a 1.6-metre Grand Prix jumper and has competed in Europe. He is the only Canadian stallion to receive KWPN (Dutch registry) Full Stallion Approval, and only the second stallion bred in North America, next to Judgment, to receive this approval.
